2nd IEEE Winter School on Fog/Edge Computing 2020

I have moved to IIT Kanpur as Director, IIT Kanpur with effect from April 18th, 2018 (on leave from IIT Bombay).

I joined IIT Bombay in April 1997. Earlier I also worked in Indian Space Research Organization, Ahmedabad (during 1988-89) and High Performance Computing Group of Center for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) (during 1994-97). In IIT Bombay, I served as Dean (Faculty Affairs) from February 2017- April 2018 and the Head of the Electrical Engineering Department from January 2nd, 2012 to January 4th, 2015. During 2014-17, I also served as the first Professor-in- charge of IIT Bombay Research Park. I was the Head of Computer Center of IIT Bombay from August 2008 to July 2011.

Dr. T. Russell Hsing is IEEE Life Fellow and Fellow for the British Computer Society and SPIE. He accumulated rich R&D experiences of 40 years as technical staff, research/engineering director and executive director through affiliations with Burroughs, Xerox, GTE Labs, and Bellcore/Telcordia/Ericsson since 1977. He is currently Chair Professor with National Chiao Tung University in Taiwan, and Advisory Council Member for Harvard Business Review. During his tenure at Telcordia, he has co-established two significant R&D centers in Taipei (Taiwan), and Poznan (Poland). Both centers focused on advanced ICT partnering with local institutions to win significant contract funding from both commercial and local government sources. He has held visiting positions at numerous universities around the globe including Taiwan, US, China, India, Singapore, Korea, and Hong Kong. He is also serving as Board Director/ Board Advisory/Mentor for several academic spin-offs. He had been Board Member for the Open Fog Consortium in 2016-2018. He has been teaching the courses of “Technology Entrepreneurship: From IP to IPO” (since 2014) and “Internet Economics” (since 2017) during past years. His research interests include Fog/Edge Computing & Networking, Vehicular Telematics & Services, Wireless 5G and Beyond, and Next Generation IoT Services and Applications, and Academic Spin-offs.

Flavio Bonomi is the founder and the Chief Technology Officer at Nebbiolo Technologies, a startup active in the domain of the Internet of Things, with particular focus on Industrial Automation.

Previously, Flavio was a Cisco Fellow, Vice President, and the Head of the Advanced Architecture and Research Organization at Cisco Systems, in San Jose, California.

At Cisco, Flavio was co-leading the vision and technology direction for Cisco’s Internet of Things initiative.

Before joining Cisco in 1999, Flavio Bonomi was at AT&T Bell Labs from 1985 and 1995, with architecure and research responsibilities, mosty relating to the evolution of the ATM technology, and then was Principal Architect at two Silicon Valley startups, ZeitNet and Stratum One.

He received an Electrical Engineering degree from Pavia University in Italy, and the Master’s and PhD in Electrical Engineering degrees in 1981 and 1985, respectively, from Cornell University in Ithaca, New York.

Kaushik Pillalamarri is the CEO & Co-founder of Smartiply, Inc., headquartered in Basking Ridge, USA. An academic spin-off from Arizona State University and Princeton University, the company creates innovative Fog / Edge Computing solutions for the IoT industry globally. They earned recognition from the CIOReview magazine for 20 Most Promising IoT Solution Providers 2018.

A versatile leader with extensive global experience, Kaushik has optimal blend of business and technology expertise across both emerging markets and developed markets. Prior to Smartiply, Kaushik was the Group CEO for Universal Industries, Ltd., Southern Africa, and the Senior Vice President of Emerging Businesses at Reliance Communications, India. A veteran of Verizon Communications in USA where he has had a rewarding career spanning 14 years, he drove several technology and process innovations earning the highest honor in the company.

Kaushik has MBA in Entrepreneurship from Southern Methodist University; Bachelors & Masters in Computer Science from Kansas State University; and Executive Education from Sloan & Wharton.

Junshan Zhang received his Ph.D. degree from the School of ECE at Purdue University in 2000. He joined the School of ECEE at Arizona State University in August 2000, where he has been Fulton Chair Professor since 2015. His research interests fall in the general field of information networks and data science, including communication networks, Internet of Things (IoT), Fog Computing, social networks, smart grid. His current research focuses on fundamental problems in information networks and data science, including Fog Computing and its applications in IoT and 5G, IoT data privacy/security, optimization/control of mobile social networks, cognitive radio networks, stochastic modeling and control for smart grid.

Prof. Zhang is a Fellow of the IEEE, and a recipient of the ONR Young Investigator Award in 2005 and the NSF CAREER award in 2003. He received the IEEE Wireless Communication Technical Committee Recognition Award in 2016. His papers have won a few awards, including the Kenneth C. Sevcik Outstanding Student Paper Award of ACM SIGMETRICS/IFIP Performance 2016, the Best Paper Runner-up Award of IEEE INFOCOM 2009 and IEEE INFOCOM 2014, and the Best Paper Award at IEEE ICC 2008 and ICC 2017. Building on his research findings, he co-founded Smartiply Inc in 2015, a Fog Computing startup company delivering boosted network connectivity and embedded artificial intelligence for IoT applications.

Prof. Zhang was TPC co-chair for a number of major conferences in communication networks, including IEEE INFOCOM 2012 and ACM MOBIHOC 2015. He was the general chair for ACM/IEEE SEC 2017, WiOPT 2016, and IEEE Communication Theory Workshop 2007. He was a Distinguished Lecturer of the IEEE Communications Society. He was an Associate Editor for IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications, an editor for the Computer Network journal, and an editor IEEE Wireless Communication Magazine. He is currently serving as an editor-at-large for IEEE/ACM Transactions on Networking and an editor for IEEE Network Magazine.

Gürkan Solmaz is a senior researcher at NEC Laboratories Europe, Germany. His research interests include AI/ML, mobile computing, and cloud-edge systems aspects of IoT with a particular focus on crowd mobility in smart cities as well as autonomous vehicles/drones in IoT applications. He received his B.S. degree in computer engineering from Middle East Technical University (METU) in Turkey and his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in computer science from the University of Central Florida (UCF) in the USA. He co-authored more than 35 papers, he was co-recipient of two best paper awards and the UCF Computer Science Ph.D. Student of the Year First Runner-up award. He serves in the technical program and organizing committees of IEEE conferences, and he has been a member of IEEE, ComSoc, ACM, SIGMOBILE, and the ACM Future of Computing Academy (FCA).

Flavio Cirillo is a Research Scientist of the IoT research team at NEC Laboratories Europe (NLE), Heidelberg, Germany. His research topics include situation-aware analytics and Internet-of-Things analytics platforms, focusing on cloud-edge, federation, privacy, data usage control aspects, mainly in the scenario of Smart Cities. He is maintainer of open projects part of the FIWARE framework covering the IoT Backend layer. He has worked in many IoT related European research projects. He has obtained a Master degree in Computer Engineering at the University of Naples Federico II.

He serves in the technical committees for IEEE conferences, and IEEE, Elsevier, MDPI, and Wiley journals. He is member of IEEE, ACM and Communication Society (ComSoc).

Dr. Leandros A. Maglaras is Associate Professor in the School of Computer Science and Informatics of De Montfort University, conducting research in the Cyber Security Centre. He obtained the B.Sc. (M.Sc. equivalent) in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece in 1998, M.Sc. in Industrial Production and Management from the University of Thessaly in 2004, and M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical & Computer Engineering from University of Thessaly, in 2008 and 2014 respectively. In 2018 he was awarded a second Ph.D. in Intrusion Detection in SCADA systems from the University of Huddersfield. He serves on the Editorial Board of several international peer-reviewed journals such as IEEE Access, Elsevier Array, Elsevier ICT Express and Emerald Continuity & Resilience Review. He is the author of more than 140 papers in scientific magazines and conferences and is a senior member of the IEEE.

Dr. Robert Bohn, of the Advanced Network Technologies Division in NIST/ITL, serves as Program Manager for the NIST Cloud Computing Program. In this role, he manages and coordinates the goals and strategy of the program and also works with industrial, academic and other government stakeholders to address requirements needed for the US Government’s successful and timely adoption of cloud computing as described in the NIST Cloud Computing Technology Roadmap (NIST SP 500-293).

The NCCP recently published a cloud federation reference architecture (CFRA) and vocabulary in February 2020 (NIST SP 500-332). Bob also serves as the chair of IEEE/P2302 Standard for Intercloud Interoperability and Federation (SIIF) to create an economy of services and resources amongst cloud providers. The P2302 will leverage the new CFRA in the creation of the standard.

Currently, Bob is working with Dr. Tao Zhang of NIST in the development of a remote driving and vehicle teleoperation program. They recently hosted an all-day virtual forum on Vehicle Teleoperation which had over 40 speakers and 500 registrants. Jianwei Huang is a Presidential Chair Professor and the Associate Dean of the School of Science and Engineering, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen. He is an IEEE Fellow, a Distinguished Lecturer of IEEE Communications Society, and a Clarivate Analytics Highly Cited Researcher in Computer Science. He received the PhD degree from Northwestern University (USA) in 2005, worked as a Postdoc Research Associate at Princeton University (USA) during 2005-2007, and worked as Assistant/Associate/Full Professor at the Department of Information Engineering at the Chinese University of Hong Kong during 2007 – 2018.

Dr. Huang has published 200+ papers in leading international journals and conferences on communications and networking, with a total Google Scholar citations of 10000+ and an H-index of 50. He is the co-author of 9 Best Paper Awards, including the IEEE Marconi Prize Paper Award in Wireless Communications in 2011. He has co-authored six books, including the textbook of "Wireless Network Pricing." He received the Chinese University of Hong Kong Young Researcher Award in 2014 and IEEE Communications Society Asia-Pacific Outstanding Young Researcher Award in 2009.

Dr. Huang has served as an Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Mobile Computing, IEEE/ACM Transactions on Networking, IEEE Transactions on Network Science and Engineering, IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications, IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in Communications - Cognitive Radio Series, and IEEE Transactions on Cognitive Communications and Networking. He has served as an Editor of Wiley Information and Communication Technology Series, Springer Encyclopedia of Wireless Networks, and Springer Handbook of Cognitive Radio. He has served as the Chair of IEEE Communications Society Cognitive Network Technical Committee and Multimedia Communications Technical Committee. He is the recipient of IEEE Communications Society Multimedia Communications Technical Committee Distinguished Service Award in 2015 and IEEE GLOBECOM Outstanding Service Award in 2010.

He is currently working as an Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering, IIT Kanpur.

Between his M.S. and Ph.D., He worked in the telecom R&D industry for 8 years where he designed, built and tested multiple state-of-the-art wireless systems from scratch. He worked at Center of Excellence in Wireless Technology (CEWiT) in Chennai as a Research Engineer where He designed a 4G LTE radio access network (RAN) testbed. Prior to that, He worked as a Design Lead in Midas Communications in Chennai, where He designed WiMAX base station and user equipments.

Tomasz Zernicki, co-founder, and CTO of Zylia (www.zylia.co) innovative company which provides tools for 3D audio recording and music production. Tomasz holds Ph.D. degrees in electrical and electronic engineering. His professional interests concentrate on: 360/VR music production, spatial sound processing, and recording. As an audio expert, he takes an active role in the Moving Picture Expert Group (MPEG) standardization committee work. He has significant contributions to the audio compression standards such as MPEG-D USAC and MPEG-H 3D Audio.

Dr. Yang Yang is currently a full professor with School of Information Science and Technology, ShanghaiTech University, China, as well as the Master of Kedao College and the Director of Shanghai Institute of Fog Computing Technology (SHIFT). Prior to that, he has held faculty positions at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Brunel University (UK), University College London (UCL, UK), and SIMIT, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS, China).

Yang's current research interests include fog/edge computing, 5G, IoT, and wireless testbeds. He has published more than 260 papers and filed over 80 technical patents in these research areas. He was a General Co-Chair of IEEE DSP 2018 conference and a TPC Vice-Chair of IEEE ICC 2019 conference. Yang is a Fellow of the IEEE.

Hong Wen, Ph.D, professor of Univ. of Elec. Sci. & Tech. of China (UESTC). Leader of ESSCN (efficient and secure space communication network research centre), senior member of IEEE. She mainly focus on the research of communication security and reliability technology, including communication network physical layer security technology, space-air-ground network security, cloud computing and edge computing security technology, mobile terminal security technology, wireless communication reliable technology, AI-based security sysetem. She teaches for undergraduates, postgraduates and doctoral student courses. In recent five years, as the project PI, she has undertaken and completed the national key R & D projects, national 863 high technology plan projects, national major special sub projects, National Natural Science Foundation of China, and more than 10 provincial and ministerial level projects. She has published over 150 papers on the top journals and conferences and applied more than 70 invention patents, in which more than 50 invention patents were authorized.

Ananth directs Research and Innovation in TCS, India’s largest IT Company. Under his leadership, TCS has created a significant portfolio of patents, papers and IP.

Ananth has served on several Governing Councils of Academia, Industry Advisory boards, and Government committees. He has been a regular invitee to the Board of TCS since 1999.

He was elected a Fellow of INAE in 2013. He was named a Distinguished Alumnus of IIT Delhi in 2009. He has been listed in Computerworld’s Premier 100 IT Leaders (2007), and in Infoworld’s Top 25 CTOs (2007).

Rajesh M Hegde is a Professor and Head of the Dept. of Electrical Engineering at IIT Kanpur. He currently holds the Umang Gupta Chair Position and was also the P.K. Kelkar Fellow (2009-13) at IIT Kanpur. His areas of interest include Machine Learning, AI, future wireless networks, pervasive/mobile communication, WSN, IoT, speech/audio processing for ASR and VR, multimodal information fusion. He also has considerable interest in robotics applications.. He also serves as the Head of the Center for Continuing Education (CCE) at IIT Kanpur.

Chun Ting Chou is an associate professor in Graduate Institute of Communication Engineering (GICE), National Taiwan University (NTU). Dr. Christopher G. Brinton is an Assistant Professor in the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) at Purdue University (2019-present). Previously he was the Associate Director of the EDGE Lab (2018-19) and a Lecturer of Electrical Engineering (2017-19) at Princeton University. Dr. Brinton's research interest is at the intersection of machine learning and networked systems, specifically in developing data-driven distributed optimization methodologies for communication and social networks. He is a co-founder (2015-present) and was Head of Advanced Research (2016-2019) at Zoomi Inc., a big data startup company that has provided learning optimization to more than one million users worldwide, and holds US Patents in machine learning. He is also a co-author of the book The Power of Networks: 6 Principles That Connect our Lives. Since joining Purdue ECE in fall 2019, Dr. Brinton has won a 2019 Purdue Seed for Success Award, the 2020 Purdue ECE Outstanding Faculty Mentor Award, the 2020 Ruth and Joel Spira Outstanding Teacher Award, and became a Senior Member of the IEEE. Dr. Brinton received the PhD (with honors) and MS Degrees from Princeton in 2016 and 2013, and the BS Degree (valedictorian) from TCNJ in 2011, all in Electrical Engineering.
